Select the correct form for your notarial needs
Choosing the Right Notary Forms
Do you need to get a notarized form but don’t know which one? You’re not the only one. Depending on the purpose and the law, many documents need different types of notarizations.
The most popular types of notarizations are:
- Acknowledgments are used when signing legal papers like deeds, contracts, or powers of attorney. You certify that you are who you say you are and that you signed the document willingly.
- Jurats are needed when you have to swear or affirm that the information in a document is truthful. They are typically used for sworn declarations and affidavits.
- Oaths and affirmations are spoken commitments that something is true or that you mean to do something legally.
If you’re not sure which notarial act you need, we suggest getting in touch with the agency, lawyer, lender, or institution that gave you the document. Notaries in North Carolina can’t choose the form for you, but we’re delighted to explain the distinctions and help you fill it out.
